This site ensued as the result of a research project, whose intent was to investigate the nineteen-century editions of French prose fiction that composed the collections of Grêmio Literário e Recreativo Português do Pará, where they are still available. The project, under my own coordination, was also valuably assisted by Scientific Initiation Fellows (PIBICS).
About Database
The elaboration of a database containing bibliographical information on samples of French prose fiction that composed the collections of the library of Grêmio Literário e Recreativo Português do Pará was the starting point for Paris in America Website. The data gathering process was performed by consulting samples, which are still available at the institution.
About Gremio
Grêmio Literário Português was founded in 1867, in the capital of the Province of Pará, by virtue of motivation and encouragement of the members of the Portuguese community already established in Belém. It was originally conceived as a reading room with the purpose of providing instruction to its associates with “a selected library” and foreign language classes – English and French. By the time of its foundation, the reading room was named simply “Grêmio Literário Português do Pará”.
Credits
The success of this research is owed to the support offered by the board of directors from Grêmio Literário e Recreativo Português do Pará, which granted access to its precious Library. The cooperation of Mrs. Nazaré Goes – the librarian – and of the fellows from PIBICs, who integrated the project at different moments, was of also crucial importance. However, the effective creation of this website relied on the financial support received from the National Counsel of Technological and Scientific Development (CNPq).
